Everyone has an occasional bad night of sleep. But if you're regularly unable to get the rest you need, you may have a sleep disorder. We can help.
The Marlette Regional Hospital sleep lab is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Our expert staff can perform a variety of sleep tests, including:
Sleep study or nocturnal polysomnogram (NPSG). Sleep studies may be a good idea for anyone who has trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep. Other signs that you might need a sleep study include snoring loudly, gasping, choking or pauses in breathing while sleeping and having frequent morning headaches.
During a sleep study, sensors are placed on the head, chest and legs and sleep is monitored by a registered sleep technologist. Several sleep disorders can be diagnosed using NPSG, including sleep apnea, which causes a person to stop breathing periodically while asleep. Untreated sleep apnea can cause daytime sleepiness and lead to serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
CPAP titration is a sleep study that is done once a person has been diagnosed with sleep apnea. The test helps determine the proper setting for using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which treats sleep apnea by delivering air through a mask during sleep. During the test, the CPAP machine is used and a registered sleep technologist monitors the person's sleep and adjusts the CPAP levels accordingly.
Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) is used to diagnose narcolepsy, which causes people to fall asleep unwillingly and unknowingly. During a MSLT, sensors are applied to the head and a series of 4 or 5 naps are taken at regular intervals and analyzed. A MSLT must be preceded by a NPSG the night before.
