Services Cardiovascular

Marlette Regional Hospital (MRH) offers a full range of cardiovascular health services. Using the latest medical technology, our highly trained staff can diagnose and treat a wide variety of cardiovascular problems.

Tests and procedures we perform include:

Electrocardiograms (EKG). An EKG is a graphic recording that shows electrical activity generated by the heart muscle. The test is used to diagnose problems such as heart rhythm disturbances.

Holter monitor testing. This test monitors the heart's electrical activity for 24 to 72 hours using a portable monitor you wear while carrying out your usual activities. The test can help diagnose problems such as abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) or inadequate blood flow.

Cardiac stress testing. Stress tests are done to see how exercise affects EKG results. During the test, you will exercise on a treadmill while your heart is monitored. If you aren't able to exercise on a treadmill, you can take medication to mimic the effects of exercise.

Event monitoring. In this test, you will wear a monitor for about 30 days to track changes in cardiac rhythm. The monitor will record events such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness or abnormal heart rhythms so that hospital staff can analyze them.

Cardioversion. In this procedure, an electrical shock is delivered to the heart to convert an abnormal heart rhythm back to a normal rhythm.

24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. This test is done to show a true picture of what your blood pressure is during a typical day. You'll wear a monitor that automatically takes blood pressure readings while you go about your normal activities.

Tilt table. This procedure is performed on people who pass out for no known reason. You lay on a table that is tilted upright for a certain period of time. Cardiac rhythm, blood pressure and oxygen levels are monitored during the test.

Our cardiovascular services are available with a physician's referral. Please call us at 989.635.4338 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Cardiac/vascular ultrasound

We offer a full range of cardiac and vascular ultrasound services, including:

Echocardiogram (Echo), which creates images of the heart as it beats and allows doctors to evaluate the heart valves, the heart muscle and the heart chambers.

If necessary, we can perform echo tests with contrast imaging to make the resulting pictures clearer.

Carotid duplex, to show how well blood is flowing through the carotid arteries in the neck.

Venous duplex, to look at blood flow in the arms or legs. This test can help diagnose poor vein function and blood clots.

Arterial doppler, to check blood pressure in the leg arteries and look for a lack of blood flow that may be caused by a blockage.

Stress echocardiography, an echo test done while you exercise on a treadmill. The motion of the heart’s pumping chamber before and immediately after exercise may reveal a lack of blood flow to the heart muscle, which could indicate a blocked artery.

If you aren't able to exercise, you can receive dobutamine stress echocardiography, which uses medicine to simulate the effects of exercise on the heart.

Ankle/brachial index (ABI), which measures blood pressure at the ankle and the arm while you are at rest. The test can help predict the severity of peripheral arterial disease.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), which takes images of the heart using a device that is inserted down the throat into the esophagus. Because the esophagus is close to the heart, clear images of the heart structures can be obtained without interference of the chest wall and lungs.
