13th Annual Tree of Shining Love

Our 13th Annual Tree of Shining Love Dedication and Tree Lighting Ceremony was held Saturday, December 8, at 3:30 p.m. at the Marlette City Hall, 6436 Morris St., Marlette.

2001 Tree of Shining Love Honorees

In Memory of

Grace Prowse

In March of 1951, Grace M. Prowse reached out to the community of Marlette by offering her knowledge and enthusiasm assisting with a campaign to build a new hospital. She became a Charter member and Treasurer of an elite group named the Marlette Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

Grace Wilson married Harry Prowse in 1933. Their lives were enriched with a wonderful family; son, Paul & Mary Lou Prowse, and a daughter, Dorothy and Jack Kelly. They were also blessed with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Prowse's volunteer spirit runs through the hearts of everyone in her family. Her husband donated and transported gravel and sand for the new hospital, her daughter, Dorothy, is the current Auxiliary Treasurer, her daughter-in-law, Mary Lou, manages the very successful hospital Gift Shop, and her granddaughter, Marty Kelly, is the Project Manager for the American Red Cross Blood Drive in Marlette.

She was a member of the Marlette First United Methodist Women Association, Marlette Eastern Stars, and a 4-H Leader. Yet, she still found time to enjoy her hobbies, which she loved, gardening, farming with her husband, horses, and bowling.

Mrs. Prowse genuinely cared about the community and gave from her heart. Volunteerism came naturally for this incredibly dedicated lady.

In Memory of
Jackie Root

Jacqueline "Jackie" Root committed her life to caring about other people. Her soft demeanor and kind words were therapy to those that were fortunate enough to know her at Marlette Regional Hospital.

Her life was first and foremost dedicated to her family; husband C.J. Root and children; Brian and Cindy Root, Cindy and Brad Cummings, and one deceased son, Lanny. Mrs. Root's grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She beamed with pride whenever she spoke about her family.

Mrs. Root was extremely versatile and worked in several departments at the hospital. With her soft voice and constant smile, she would ease out the proudest memories of everyone she came to know.

She was a long time member of the Brown City United Methodist Church and served in the choir, taught Sunday School and was a youth leader for many years.

Her smiling face is greatly missed, but her memory will live on forever.

Donations from the 13th Annual Tree of Shining Love will be directed toward the purchase of equipment and furnishings for the Extended Care Facility.
