DIABETIC EDUCATION GRANTS AWARDED TO AREA HOSPITALS

Walter Winter, President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, presents grants to Certified Diabetic Educators (left) Melanie Campbell, Marlette Regional Hospital and (right) Bonnie Powell, McKenzie Memorial Hospital.
Sanilac County, MI - On Thursday, June 18, 2009 at an award ceremony held at the Valley Plaza Conference Center, Midland, and the Michigan Fraternal Order of Eagles awarded $35,000 grants to both Marlette Regional Hospital and McKenzie Memorial Hospital to support diabetes education throughout our communities.
McKenzie Memorial Hospital and Marlette Regional Hospital offer Diabetes Self Management Training Programs. Because diabetes is a disease that is primarily managed with lifestyle interventions, it is critical that people have access to these quality diabetes education services.
Diabetes impacts the lives of so many in our community. Approximately 17,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes in Sanilac, Tuscola, and Lapeer Counties alone. In addition, another 40% of adults between ages 40-74 years old have a condition known as pre-diabetes. Assisting individuals in gaining better control of their diabetes or their diabetic risk factors will improve the quality of health for diabetics and assist in preventing the development of the disease for pre-diabetics.
Bonnie Powell, RN, Certified Diabetes Education (CDE) at McKenzie Memorial Hospital said, “There is little that is currently being done for patients who are pre-diabetic. We recognize that formal education and counseling to help an individual develop a plan for making positive lifestyle changes would be of benefit to pre-diabetics.” To find out more about McKenzie Hospital’s Pre-Diabetes Education & Health Promotion Program contact Bonnie Powell, RN, CDE, at McKenzie Memorial Hospital at 810-648-6187.
Melanie Campbell, RN, CDE, at Marlette Regional Hospital (MRH) states, “This generous gift from the Fraternal Order of Eagles will undoubtedly help us further our efforts to provide support, resources, and diabetes self-management skills to those affected by diabetes and their families. It will also assist in our on-going community diabetes seminars, monthly support group for family, friends, and caregivers and healthy living events.” For more information, please contact Melanie Campbell, RN, CDE, at Marlette Regional Hospital, 989-635-4348.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international non-profit organization, whose mission is to unite fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice, and equality, to make human life more desirable by lessening its ills, and by promoting peace, prosperity, gladness and hope.
